This is Australia 

What I’ve noticed over here in the land of the creepy is that these spiders really don’t move all that much. It’s really helped my phobia diminish to the point that I can get up pretty close and get a decent shot. Not too close though.


There was a time when I was walking through a relatives garden late at night in Sydney and I almost walked face first into a web like this. If it wasn’t for my iPhone torch I would have been peeling it off my face frantically like Jim Carrey in The Mask. That’s not a job I want to have before bed.

But saying that I love late night walks and seeing these webs. The spiders are pretty damn impressive and if you keep a look out, they are there and they seem happy to stay there for the shot.

    1. Haha, it does looking at it again… What I love about some of these species is that they have amazing patterns and colours, it makes me appreciate them a little more.

    2. Allowing for the flash, this looks like a Golden Orb Web Spider, the largest spider species found in Brisbane. The female body length is approximately 20mm and they are common in bushes and gardens like mine but are low risk non-toxic. They can spin very large webs, vertical or slightly inclined and often high up 🙂

      1. I encountered a lot of Golden Orbs on the farm, I loved the webs and colours of the spiders. I think it was this species that helped me overcome the phobia and appreciate the species! I wasn’t sure if this was one however but if so, cool!

  9. That’s a great photo ! I would’ve loved to take a shot like this ! Spiders are so awesome and hard working creatures . I am glad you didn’t walk face first into it though . I wouldn’t want to do that either -even though I like spiders . Great post and shot !

    1. I am just frustrated it is as blurry as it is, but I like it too 🙂 Thankfully it was a busy footpath so the only webs were in the bushes on the sides of the path, so we were always a good distance away haha.

    1. Trust me I have learned that since living here xD I almost face planted a HUGE spiders web in Sydney walking through my families garden at night, if I didn’t have my torch on it wouldn’t have been a very pleasant end to the evening…

      2. Probably! And I think I heard once that noone dies from spider bites (it is incredibly rare now) in Australia however car crashes because a spider jumped out or something is more of a killer. So I can imagine heart attacks too! Sadly…
