I took an even bigger walk today (lots more photos)

Today is my last day off work, and with that I wanted to make the most of it. I am only working four days and off for another four, but still. The 13 hour shifts take up the whole day and give me little to do other than have breakfast and grab a bite before bed.

So I headed to Victoria Park, a huge park east up the canal from my location. I started in the same area as I did in my previous canal post and began walking… It took me little over half an hour to get there. I took my winter coat in case of any rain, thankfully there wasn’t any.

Spotify playlist: Kerrang Rock Songs of the 00’s. I was feeling nostalgic.

And Ruled by Secrecy Matt, I thought you would like to know.

IMG_4494

The walk is just as entertaining as the park itself, with plenty to see along the canal. And although I didn’t show you this last time, LOTS of graffiti. I like it though, it adds plenty of colour. You will see this throughout the post.

IMG_E4394IMG_E4395IMG_4396

So this is where the taxi’s hibernate when they aren’t needed…

IMG_E4397

And this pub looks like it’s been closed since the last pandemic… just kidding, it could be lovely inside for all I know. I don’t want to be banned in case I ever try it out.

IMG_E4398IMG_E4400

IMG_E4399

IMG_E4402IMG_E4403

I made it to Victoria Park. Admittedly I didn’t know exactly how to get to it, but because of how big it is on the map I just knew I would end up close. I found this entrance with a dog statue, according to Look Up London these are replicas of 2nd Century Roman dog statues that can be found in the British Museum.

IMG_4404IMG_4406

All benches were covered in tape with signs telling people not to use. These were accompanied by spray painted instructions on the ground to ‘Keep Left’ at a distance of 2 meters. I imagine Banksy was given the task of inspiring London to stick to the rules in this instance.

IMG_4407IMG_4408

Now this park is huge. Not on the same scale as Hyde Park but more than enough to do one lap and get a good bit of exercise in. Here are some of my favourite shots from the walk, showing some of the parks highlights and due to the restrictions, closed off areas.

Shouldn’t you be inside, human?!

IMG_4443IMG_4447IMG_4449IMG_4451IMG_4452IMG_4457IMG_4459IMG_E4461

You see the hooped object just under the crane in the above shot? I didn’t know I walked that far, but this is the ArcelorMittal Orbit, a 114.5m tall sculpture in Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park in Stratford. As I am sure many Premier League fans are aware, London Stadium is now being used by West Ham United.

The group in the picture spent their time shouting at potential groups gathering and being too close to one another. I assume this, as I heard one use the megaphone below whilst walking in the direction of the Shard.

IMG_4464

To give you a reference point, this is the map of London showing Victoria Park as well as London Stadium, The Shard and Canary Wharf.

Capture (1)

One Canada Square in Canary Wharf is the second tallest building in the United Kingdom, with a distinctive pyramid roof. It can be seen (faintly) in the distance behind all the buildings in the below shot.

IMG_E4466IMG_E4467

Police officers were present, some walking, some on bikes and some on horseback. I spotted an ambulance at one entrance too.

IMG_E4471IMG_4475IMG_4477

aaand the walk back home.

IMG_4478IMG_E4479IMG_E4481IMG_4487IMG_4490IMG_4491IMG_E4495IMG_4496IMG_4498IMG_4501

I hope you liked the shots!! Oh, and reading this post counts as your one session of daily exercise.

Just so you know 😉

Normality is temporary

You never know how quickly ‘normality’ can change. Literally overnight. And before long that normality is looked back on with fascination.

IMG_2862-2

The pub you can see above is The Hung Drawn and Quartered, not too far from the Tower of London. This was a punishment given to Guy Fawkes for his crimes, at the time not too wild. Then one day the death penalty was abolished and now we look back in horror at how immoral this punishment was. The only thing between normality and insanity is time.

But on a much smaller and less brutal scale, I wanted to share the last of my winter pictures in one post. A time when crowds were the normality I speak of, and after just a few weeks of isolation how strange it looks now.

How strange it will be to get back to this normality.

IMG_3963-2

Police stopping traffic and pedestrians as someone leaves Buckingham Palace, before biking off and the rush continues.

Football fans flying into London for an away game, meeting in their masses at Piccadilly Circus. How outrageous would this meeting be right now?!

t/sdcard/DCIM/100GOPRO/GOPR0736t/sdcard/DCIM/100GOPRO/GOPR0740

A beautiful sight nevertheless. Seeing groups of tourists learning about the area and finally being allowed to travel again. In a way this lockdown helps me to appreciate what can easily be taken for granted. Basic freedoms of movement for example. However it also reminds me that just because these are taken away doesn’t mean we aren’t free, although I have seen some people suggest this is the case. Sometimes we have to make sacrifices to help us move forward. Taking a step back is sometimes the quickest way forward. And I am taking this time to see what I am missing about ‘normality’. Not with anger, but with appreciation for what we have waiting for us again.

Exploring my little corner of London

I don’t walk daily, although I should. I do some basic exercises in the flat and pop to the shops every few days, but rarely do I take a stroll around my neighbourhood. I guess this is why I felt less guilty about doing so today and seeing a few people along the way.

From a distance of course.

IMG_4370

I am lucky enough to live near a canal (big city problems), it is pretty relaxing to walk along the water with the occasional houseboat sailing by. Despite being right in the heart of London this little area is an oasis of calm away from the traffic, the tranquility even more apparent right now. With hardly any cars crossing the bridges overhead and just a few people on the paths below, I headed down.

IMG_4368

But just before I did I had a little walk around the streets. As soon as I crossed the bridge I walked up to some new build apartments, and walking along these streets I wondered how much the houses cost here. Some older than others and all terraced however I know they mustn’t be cheap. The kind you would see in a movie based in London, with railings lining the pavement and steps leading up to the front door.

The classic red postboxes on the corner, too. However these are dotted all around London and the whole country.

IMG_4366IMG_4363

It is sad to see pubs like this closed down. They have been a place to meet and for hundreds of years and all of a sudden it has came to a sudden stop. Tables are put up, doors are locked and owners cross their fingers hoping that they can open the doors again someday.

IMG_4359

When the pubs are closed on a weekday evening it definitely has an apocalyptic feel.

IMG_E4360

But where humans are absent nature still thrives. I don’t want to be the person giving it the ‘humans are the virus!’ and all that, instead I prefer to celebrate both humanity and the nature around us. Yes we can sometimes make it difficult to love our own species but we have lots to celebrate. And hopefully we will be celebrating together again soon.

IMG_4362

But back to the canal. I would be lying if I didn’t say it had quite a few people along the walkways, but not enough to put me off. Everyone was good at giving space and cyclists ringing their bells to warn me of them approaching. It was quiet enough for me to stop a few times on route and take some shots to share with you, and the weather was great too.

IMG_4375

t/sdcard/DCIM/100GOPRO/GOPR1116

IMG_4374

I took a seat for a moment and gazed down the water, I noticed that on my armrest someone placed a sticker there. It was in the shape of an iPhone with a fake screen. Curiosity got the better of me and I read it…

IMG_4373

Clearly a shopkeeper wasn’t happy with two girls being noisy in a store and refused to sell them alcohol, so the girls decided to take action and tell the world. No one should be refused a sale of course under such circumstances, but I do find it funny how the age and genders of all three were important in this story and were mentioned.

Justice for Erica!

IMG_4372IMG_E4371IMG_E4376IMG_E4379

This is Shoreditch Park, right around the corner from where I live in Hackney. I didn’t realise how beautiful the views were from here. London’s skyline looks great and I can even see the Shard, despite it being over 2 miles away and over the river Thames!

IMG_4381IMG_4382

No wonder it seems like a popular place for exercise. And despite its popularity people were good at keeping a distance. It can easily look overcrowded from a distance, but it is a big park. If anything the canal was a bigger threat.

I wanted to share this beautiful skyline with you on a perfect day in London. I am pleased I went out for it and got back just in time for the weekly ‘clap for the NHS’, which is an organised applause at 8pm on Thursdays for those treating people during the pandemic. If anything it seems to be getting louder each week, and I am delighted about that.

So some good views and good news from today’s post!

Speak to you all soon.

I filmed a walk through London during lockdown (video in post)

Today I spent the afternoon chopping/editing some footage I collected on my GoPro on Saturday. It was a video of my walk to the shops that I posted about here. Usually this isn’t the most exciting thing to capture on film, but during a pandemic this might be footage I show to my grandkids in decades to come. I was going for groceries and made a couple of stops, so it was allowed.

I have marked Old Street on the map below, so you can get an idea of where I am in London. Very central on the border of the boroughs of Hackney and Islington. From my starting point I face south and head down beneath the roundabout, then turning west and coming back up onto Old Street Road. The whole walk pretty much takes place in the little highlighted circle below.

Capture

At the start of the video I walk through Old Street Underground station, it is almost empty. Over 20 million people head through the ticket barriers annually, however in the video it looks more like an abandoned station. An announcement can be heard advising those that aren’t key workers to stay at home, and all the businesses that trade down there are closed. A simple message of Stay Home, Don’t Travel, Save Lives. A huge contrast to how it looked when I took this shot earlier in the year.

DSC_0202-2

I head a little further, you will notice I say a few words to those I engage with on the walk. Yes, I do speak sometimes!! For anyone curious as to what I sound like, here it is. I speak to two homeless people, a couple of shoppers and the shop assistants. One day I may do a video where I speak to viewers directly, however I am still way too shy for that. And also this video was made purely to document what London is currently like during this lockdown.

I hope you like the footage, it was filmed on a GoPro Hero 7 Silver in 4K. I am so new to uploading videos (this is only my second upload on my YouTube channel) I have no idea how to upload with the best quality. The same during editing. So this is practice more than anything… it isn’t as crisp right now, but maybe it is still processing. We shall see.

I thought this would be my blog post for today, a little insight as to where I live and what London life is currently like.

I hope you enjoy!

An escape from the flat

Thank you all for the love you have shown me in my last post, I appreciate it. I have just responded to the comments there and I feel so lucky to have this amazing WP community to engage with every single day. It is a blessing right now for all of us to be able to engage in isolation. We are lucky to have technology allowing us to communicate to each other across the world, what a fortunate time to be alive.

Yesterday I went to the shops. That really is an exciting story in 2020. I had to go to four in total as each one I went to didn’t have everything I needed. I needed mouthwash (currently sold out in supermarkets, so I had to visit the pharmacy), that was store one. Store two had no chopped tomatoes, but it did have turkey mince. Store three didn’t have chopped tomatoes either, but it did have straws that my flatmate asked me to get.

Also whilst I was buying flavoured teas I wanted to share this. Did you know that the company Twinings has this message on their packaging…

‘By appointment to her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II’

This is because Twinings supply goods to the Royal Family, and have done since the 1800’s. They have a shop over 300 years old in London that I will blog about when I can visit. A cool little fact I wanted to share with you all.

Store four was my little local shop that had everything. So far these smaller groceries have been the best for stock, most people emptying the supermarkets it seems. I got chopped tomatoes, passata and today made a banging chili. That will last me a few days until I have my next crazy adventure.

Just a little travel update, until the next…

Some more winter shots…

Here are a couple more winter shots from around London, these were taken in the Soho area, close to Piccadilly Circus in my previous post.

t/sdcard/DCIM/100GOPRO/GOPR0711

These were taken on my GoPro Hero 7 silver, a fairly new model when I bought it. I really wanted to get a camera that would take good video and timelapses, but I also wanted to experiment with the images I could get from it too. It has more of a fish eye lens meaning a lot can fit into the screen from close proximity.

Some decent shots can be taken on the ground (literally putting it on the floor with it being waterproof) and getting the ground, buildings and sky all in one shot for a more all round photo.

t/sdcard/DCIM/100GOPRO/GOPR0713

I also used this in Edinburgh, catching some nice shots of the local sights. It is a great camera for still shots, with objects appearing so close you can almost touch them despite capturing so much behind it too. My sister being the center of attention in the first shot!

t/sdcard/DCIM/100GOPRO/GOPR0372GOPR0368t/sdcard/DCIM/100GOPRO/GOPR0380GOPR04712

If anyone is interested I have linked the Edinburgh post right here, it really is one of my favourite cities and one I never get bored of walking around. Both the architecture and landscape is stunning and I couldn’t recommend it enough. You may recognize the last picture as the one I use on my Instagram and at the bottom of my website when scrolling down. Despite the Walter Scott Monument being in Edinburgh I haven’t found a picture I want to replace with it yet in London. So it will remain for a wee while!

Just a couple more shots I wanted to share with you, more tomorrow and hopefully more time too. I have been fairly busy today, despite not leaving the house. My flatmate and I are currently watching Tiger King as well, which so far has got us both hooked. For someone that doesn’t watch much TV, I have surprised myself for sure.

Has anyone been watching it? It seems to have everyone’s attention.

No spoilers though please!!

😀

Uploading my last winter shots (and practicing presets for my summer ones!)

We are heading into the middle of spring here in Europe. The days are getting longer and brighter, even if we can only witness this from our kitchen window. But that window is being opened a little more everyday, and the sunshine alone is keeping me in good spirits.

Saying that, I still have a small backlog of winter photos that I haven’t had the chance to upload yet. So I am doing so before it’s too late.

The shot below for example. I captured a commuter yawning, or yelling at me, whichever you prefer to believe!

t/sdcard/DCIM/100GOPRO/GOPR0705

I think I was heading up Regent Street to look at the Christmas lights, which is just past the Underground sign seen on the left of this shot. I could have also been doing a clothes shop as I badly needed new clothes on my return home. Oxford Circus is right up the other end of Regent Street and great for shopping.

I chuckled to myself looking at these pictures, as at the time of taking them all I could think about was the summer sun. I didn’t know that I would later look back and take that cold weather for a life without a pandemic…

GOPR06931-2

The ground at Piccadilly Circus looks more like a mirror in the rain. I love the reflections from the famous advertising boards and I have seen so many great shots of them on Instagram. The rain in London will give me plenty of time to perfect those puddle reflection shots that’s for sure. And speaking of the weather, it has provided me a little challenge to work on.

Now I am uploading more frequently on IG, I have been looking at creating a preset for my London shots to give a more consistent look. With the skies here constantly changing from bright blue to cloudy, the look and lighting in each shot varies wildly. Great for the variety, but hard to give shots my own unique look. Below is an example of my recent shots and you can see that despite the change in weather, the shots all share a similar colour and lighting theme. This is an example of a preset, pre-adjusted settings in software that you can create yourself and add to your photos.

I have a lot to learn on the Adobe software I am using (presets are in a programme called Lightroom), but with the free time I have this is a blessing I guess! Got to stay productive in times like these.

Are you using presets? If so let me know your theme and style. Hopefully I will have gotten much better in time for summer, and I hope you are liking the shots so far!

Stay safe,

Sam

Don’t try this at home

Walking underneath the skyscrapers in my previous post, I came across this interesting piece of art.

I think this is what causes pandemics…

DSC_0237-2

This is ‘Crocodylius Philodendrus’ by Nancy Rubins. On the website sculptureinthecity.org.uk it tells us a little bit about the artwork:

As part of her series Diversifolia– which in the scientific names of plants indicates a single species possessed with a considerable variety of leaf, Crocodylius Philodendrus employs clusters of bouquet like arrangements comprised out of a variety of animal forms that explode into space in all directions. Her calculated compositions employ a structural property called “tensegrity,” wherein individual parts are arranged in balanced compression and secured with tensile cables, that galvanizes the aluminium crocodiles, hogs and deer, cast iron tortoises, and bronze zebras into purely formal, abstract components as they propel into space due to their aggregate momentum. Circumnavigating her towering assemblage reveals the transformation of found objects and industrial refuse into expertly orchestrated abstractions that are fluid and rhizomatic in nature.

Lots of fancy words there. And lots of cool animals that can’t be found in London so I stayed there for a while staring at it from different angles.

DSC_0242-2

The website displays many pieces of art that are currently dotted around the city centre, but also reminds everyone during the pandemic to refrain from looking for them for the time being. But at least I can show you this one, and if this kind of art is your thing, more can be seen in the link at the bottom of this post.

It takes me back to November 2017, walking along the coastline in Sydney whilst Sculptures by the Sea was taking place. Similar sculptures and if you want to check them out I have linked that post too. And who doesn’t like ocean pictures?! 😉

What do you think of this piece of art? Let me know!

London’s modern landmarks

When I was younger I always imagined that the skyscraper clusters of cities would be the most active. Like all of the time. The sheer scale of them and how they light up at night, they always look alive 24/7. Especially with how movies love to pan over them during scenes.

But this isn’t the case. Outside of the 9-5 they are lonelier areas providing nothing more than a skyline to gaze at. A beautiful skyline. London has great skyscrapers and despite not being the biggest in the world, have a lot of character. From the Gherkin to the Walkie-Talkie to the Shard (which is in fact the tallest in Europe), they aren’t dull to look at.

Below is 22 Bishopsgate. I managed to get this shot whilst the sun was bouncing off it onto the commuters below. This was originally planned to have a ‘helter skelter’ shape and be even taller, but was abandoned during the early stages of construction in the 2008 recession. The height was also scaled down as to not interfere with the flight path of London City Airport.

IMG_3930-2

I have always loved skyscrapers, and the UK has been behind in building these. But we are in Europe afterall, and skyscrapers are only just seeing the light of day in this continent. One reason being it’s history and not wanting to distort the view of historical buildings. I guess there are more rules around what can be built around historical sites.

DSC_0206-2

The Walkie-Talkie, towering above the street below. With the floors above being wider than the ones below, sunlight caused a problem during construction. The beams of light reflecting off the glass hit the pavement and scorched it, melting a car and caused people to fry eggs in the street. The news report below was quite amusing to watch at the time.

I think London is now in a skyscraper boom, with clusters in the City of London (as seen in these shots), Canary Wharf and also Vauxhall. As I have mentioned I like them, but understand they aren’t for everyone.

What about yourself, when you think of London do you associate it with modern buildings such as the London Eye and the Shard, or the historical sites such as Big Ben and Tower Bridge? I guess the older attractions are still the most popular, but who knows what the future holds. The castles and bridges are constantly shrinking under the sight of these huge towers, maybe they will create a legacy of their own…

DSC_0253-2

I’ve just noticed the taxi’s reg plate reads ‘CAB’, haha.

Learning not to hate each other in lockdown

It seems we are all struggling to stay sane right now, who knew staying indoors would be so difficult. It is certainly more difficult when told to do something compared to when we have the choice.

I for one certainly took my walks for granted.

t/sdcard/DCIM/100GOPRO/GOPR0837

I have always loved walking, and always dreamed of walking down new streets in a new location. I guess I took being allowed to do so for granted, not seeing anything on the horizon that would take this right away so fast.

92236023_2959800877440429_7562999540635140096_n

But before you know it something is on the horizon, and moves like a shockwave taking you out. We are all being hit by that shockwave right now. But attempts are being taken to reduce the effects such as staying indoors, although being stuck with each other in such a small area is having an effect too.

DSC_01151-2

My mum, sister and I all live separately and we all enjoy video calling everyday. We aren’t constantly under each others feet and I think in the long term this will be beneficial. Not that I want to be in isolation for a long time and of course I miss my family a hell of a lot, but we can do each others heads in after a little while. We all have our habits and do things that grind each others gears, and this is normal. I hope.

So although I wish we were all together to get through this, I am feeling grateful for technology allowing us to chat anytime. A time that we all agree on and we can’t be pests at the times when we just want some alone time. The best of both worlds really. I have a flatmate that I don’t see too often and we chat on the odd occasion but that’s it. I worry if I moved in a little earlier and we were a little closer by now we would be much more prone to annoying each other. I am also working which breaks up the day and allows me a change of scenery, something that has kept me in a good state of mind for sure.

How are you finding isolation? Who are you living with and are you ripping each others hair out yet? I hope not, although this is perfectly normal for families!

Sending love to you all.
