Don’t try this at home

Walking underneath the skyscrapers in my previous post, I came across this interesting piece of art.

I think this is what causes pandemics…

This is ‘Crocodylius Philodendrus’ by Nancy Rubins. On the website sculptureinthecity.org.uk it tells us a little bit about the artwork:

As part of her series Diversifolia– which in the scientific names of plants indicates a single species possessed with a considerable variety of leaf, Crocodylius Philodendrus employs clusters of bouquet like arrangements comprised out of a variety of animal forms that explode into space in all directions. Her calculated compositions employ a structural property called “tensegrity,” wherein individual parts are arranged in balanced compression and secured with tensile cables, that galvanizes the aluminium crocodiles, hogs and deer, cast iron tortoises, and bronze zebras into purely formal, abstract components as they propel into space due to their aggregate momentum. Circumnavigating her towering assemblage reveals the transformation of found objects and industrial refuse into expertly orchestrated abstractions that are fluid and rhizomatic in nature.

Lots of fancy words there. And lots of cool animals that can’t be found in London so I stayed there for a while staring at it from different angles.

The website displays many pieces of art that are currently dotted around the city centre, but also reminds everyone during the pandemic to refrain from looking for them for the time being. But at least I can show you this one, and if this kind of art is your thing, more can be seen in the link at the bottom of this post.

It takes me back to November 2017, walking along the coastline in Sydney whilst Sculptures by the Sea was taking place. Similar sculptures and if you want to check them out I have linked that post too. And who doesn’t like ocean pictures?! 😉

What do you think of this piece of art? Let me know!

Due to the Coronavirus outbreak I am somewhat limited as to what I can do in London, but I aim to post as much as I can during this time. I promise to have some great posts coming your way once this is all over as I continue to explore London.

Stay home, stay safe and happy blogging!

Accidental Street Art

Horrible. That’s the only way I can describe the weather in the UK right now, storm after storm bringing relentless rain and wind. For that reason I only went out once, to pop to the shops whilst there was still some light, and I found a cool little something on route.

Someone put a yellow cone over a ground light and I loved it.

Now at first silly me thought this was a cool futuristic cone that actually lights up, until I noticed we aren’t there yet as a civilisation and it was just plonked on a light. But if anything it made me cherish the moment even more. Who put it there? Was it on purpose or just dropped by some worker that didn’t realise their artwork as they walked away?

Just a little something I wanted to share on my only wander today, reminding me that we don’t have to go too far to find a cool discovery and it may be on our doorstep.

I may be milking this a little bit more than it is worth, but I did find it very cool in all honesty.

I hope you think the same 😀

Update: The artist behind the blue dragon!

Just a quick thank you to Gretchen over at Thoughts Become Words for letting me know who the artist is that added this dragon to a tree, close to the Goodwill Bridge over the Brisbane River.

She very kindly notified me in a comment and provided a link to some information over here at BrisbaneTimes.com on the artist and various pieces they have over the city of Brisbane. I have just added them on Instagram and linked to their account below.

blu.artxinja

It has been there for a while, two and a half years! However due to weathering and time this is a more recent version and has been designed to last a lot longer.

Thank you Gretchen for the information, very cool! This is why I love to blog, to share the things I find and speak to people both locally and internationally that may know more. I thought it wouldbe hard to find some info about a piece so small and hidden however delighted that this was the case.

Happy hunting!

We found a cool hidden street in the Blue Mountains!

I visited the Blue Mountains again with my friend whilst in Sydney. For $2.50 on a Sunday it is a must, and my friend notified me of a street he really wanted to see in this small town via some online research. I had no idea about it, but I am glad we went on the search for it here in Katoomba.

It is smack bang in the middle of town, however being a fairly sleepy town nothing makes it stand out without keeping your eyes peeled. Beverly Place is the street and more information can be found by clicking here.

The street isn’t a particularly long one, but it is crammed with art of all styles and messages. Some of the art is more hidden than others, so it is important to check every wall of each building to not miss anything during the walk. Here is a gallery of the art, click on any image to enlarge.

What do you think of the art? It was a hidden treasure in the city and I am glad I discovered it on my second visit. Have a favourite? Let me know!

Thursday views

This was my view today as I visited the Club Lounge in the Sofitel Brisbane Central. It’s an amazing hotel in the CBD, I’m not staying there I just had to share the view.

We stopped for lunch and boy was it good. The desserts were pretty damn nice too!

Changing subject a little, I have read your responses to my post, asking whether or not you found it a good idea to add a street-art page to my blog. It currently is 100% in favour, so I will add this very soon.

Thank you again for your continuous feedback, I can’t wait to set it up!

I look forward to updating you on my travels around this great city.

Sam
